The principles embodied in quantum mechanics are said to imply a central role for the human mind in determining the very nature of the universe. The assertion is made that quantum mechanics has ruled invalid the materialistic, reductionist view of the universe. Materialism is being replaced by a new spiritualism, and reductionism is being cast aside by a new holism that includes the simultaneous, superluminal interaction between human consciousness and the material universe. These ideas can be seen in the popular writings of physicist Fritjov Capra and physician Deepak Chopra, among many others. Almost any book you pick up these days on modern mysticism, paranormal phenomena, or alternative medicine will mention quantum mechanics as providing a scientific foundation for their claims. Currently fashionable postmodern attacks on science also look to quantum mechanics for support. In this talk, I report some of the claims being made, including many by physicists, and review the various interpretations of quantum mechanics that have led people to make these claims. I show that alternative interpretations exist that do not require anything spooky. I argue that the EPR paradox and Aspect experiments do not provide a basis for mystical interpretations, either in terms of a connection to consciousness or providing for a holistic universe of instantaneous connections.
