Software on physics

These are software packages that we've installed recently. If there's something that you'd like to see on here, send mail to help@physics.wm.edu and tell us what it is.
    New Software
  • AUCTEX --A much enhanced LATEX mode for emacs.
  • ImageMagick--An image file format conversion package and a whole lot more.
  • emacs--THE unix editor. The basic commands are documented here. Here's all the emacs texinfo pages for your perusal. Check out xemacs on physics.
  • md5--A digital fingerprint program used to make sure no one has tampered with the file you're downloading. See the md5 man page for more details.
  • olvwm--A window manager for X. Many of you used it on the old dept server. Now you can use it again. Type man olvwm at a shell prompt for help setting it up.
  • perl--A powerful file/text manipulation language.
  • pgp --A pretty good encryption program. Send secure email. Protect your files from nosey users. You can access a shorter help page, but you should read the long one if you really want security.
  • pine --A simple to use mailer. Lots of online help.
  • unix introduction -- A brief introduction to unix with lots of answers to a beginners frequently asked questions.
  • x3270 --An based version of tn3270. This opens a new window with a telnet session to a machine running the VMS operating system. You'll want to use this to register for courses.
  • xemacs --Emacs with a better front end. It's a few revisions back (19.13) but you won't want to write LaTeX docs with out it. This is the emacs texinfo archive. There shouldn't be too many differences.
  • xfig--A drawing package for X. Will output color PostScript. For help type man xfig at a shell prompt. Check /usr/local/share/xfig-examples for drawing examples.
  • xfm--A file manager for X. If you are unfamiliar with Unix but know Windows, this is for you. Type xfm.install to install the file manager in your root directory then type xfm to run the file manager. Now you can do drag and drop printing, double click on a file to edit it, etc...
  • xmgr --A 2D graphics package. This seems to be the dept fave. The link gives you lots of help. Check /usr/local/share/xmgr-examples for plotting examples.
