Outline of Introduction to Unix Lecture

I've tried to organize this based on what new users try to do and the problems they encounter. Hopefully most things will be self contained and I'll try to cross-reference whenever possible.

Logging into a unix machine

• From the console or an X-terminal.
• From telnet on a pc or mac.
• From telnet or rlogin on another unix machine.
• How do I tell what kind of terminal I'm using?

• Using pine.
• Managing your mail.
• Finding an address for someone to whom you want to send email.

File Manipulation

• Directories. (Where am I?)
• Changing directories.
• Copying files.
• Deleting files.
• Moving or renaming files.
• Listing files.
• Linking files.
• Making a file readable, writable, and executable.

Telnet/FTP

• Computer addresses.
• Telnet (logging in from one computer to another).
• FTP (copying files from one computer to another).

Your Shell

• Intro.
• Shell globbing.
• I/O redirection and piping.
• Personalizing commands.

Getting Help

• Documenation.
• Asking the gurus.

X11 Configuration

• Intro.
• Setting where the windows are displayed.
• Setting window premissions.
• Setting fonts.
• Setting colors.
• Reloading X configuration file.

Software

• Do we have a program that does BLAH?
• How do I figure out how to use it?
