The Course:
Physics 786 is an introductory, graduate-level course on the general
theory of relativity. The course covers the formulation
of the theory, as well as applications to astrophysics and cosmology.
Textbook:
The required textbook is "Spacetime and Geometry",
by Sean Carroll.
Prerequisites:
There are no official prerequisites for the course. I will assume
that you have some familiarity with special relativity.
Homework, Tests and Grading:
Grades will be based on take-home assignments, which will be given as needed. (It is a matter of convention whether you call some of these "homework" or "take-home exams". The number of points per problem will vary and will be stated in each assignment.) I will try to give these assignments regularly, though not necessarily every week.
Communications:
Official communications may be sent to the class via e-mail.
It is your responsibility to read your e-mail.
