The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three scientists for their landmark experiments demonstrating macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in a superconducting electric circuit. In ground-breaking experiments they transformed quantum tunneling - ability of quantum systems to pass through impenetrable walls - from a scientific curiosity into a controllable effect in macroscopic devices, unlocking new pathways toward practical quantum technology. In this talk, Prof. Rossi will explain this seemingly impossible behavior of superconducting circuits, and explore its importance for superconducting qubits, quantum computing, quantum sensors, and other quantum technologies.
